Several of the nation's top electrical engineering schools offer online electrical engineering university degrees, including ABET-accredited programs for undergraduates.

With the demand for online and distance education growing among professional and nontraditional students, top-ranked state and private universities are moving their on-campus programs into the online educational realm.

This is particularly true for electrical engineering schools, as there has been a rise in online electrical engineering university programs being offered from some of the top schools in the United States.

This article reviews both an ABET-accredited undergraduate program and quality graduate programs from the best engineering programs.

Top Electrical Engineering Schools – University of Michigan

The University of Michigan has the seventh-best graduate electrical engineering university program in the United States, according U.S. News & World Report's 2009 rankings, and offers an online electrical engineering master's degree.

Students are required to take 30 credit hours of core engineering courses, which are available in the following specialized areas of study:

  • Control systems
  • Digital signal processing
  • Wireless networks
  • Embedded systems
  • Pattern recognition
  • Image processing

Online courses are delivered over a centralized platform on an asynchronous schedule, which allows students to view archived lectures at their convenience. Additionally, students have access online to assignments, learning resources, group projects and discussion forums.

Students in the graduate program have the ability to from the following concentration areas:

  • Automatic controls
  • Communications, Networking, Signal & Image Processing
  • Energy Sources and Systems
  • Field and Optics
  • Microelectronics and Nanotechnology
  • VL SI and Circuit Design

Students are required to take 30 credit hours, which equals 10 courses. Students have a thesis option which only requires 18 credit hours in conjunction with the completion of a quantitative thesis.

Online courses at Purdue are delivered on an asynchronous schedule, allowing students to learn online when it is most convenient for them. Lectures are available in streaming video over the internet, and some courses provide supplementary physical learning materials.
